Examples of Kevcor's Work

Kevcor offers a depth of hands-on, successful experience in residential, mixed-use, commercial, transportation and Defense market sectors, with core expertise in Project Management and Controls, specialized Owner Representation, and design / build. The following flow of projects highlights how our services often add value to the complex environment of design / build, public-private-partnerships, and engineer-procure-construct industry.

Risk Management. Usually the big-risk with footings is exposure to latent defect from differential and total settlement.  At Kevcor we manage this and other risks on balance with the cost competitivenss of our client, helping them sell and make money. During design we don't accept answers from others at face value, think outside the box, pay relentless attention to detail, and apply common sense. This photo is an example from one of our projects where the team faced a costly geotechnical challenge. Initial borings suggested a significant lense of unsuitable material. The engineer recommended piles. Not accepting this answer we mobilized and dug test pits, took robust samples, and conducted insitu testing. We discovered the material was in-fact suitable for bearing with spread footings, proved it, and all that needed to done in the end was not disturb the material when excavating, and we didn't. Worked perfectly and save our client a boat-load of money.

Value. A big part of our job is getting a project out the ground safely, economically and in a timely manner no matter what the conditions. In this image we are looking at the top of segmental footings that standing 10-feet below river bottom for a bridge. The bridge is in a valley with limited access, permits constrained vehicle movement, and the nature of the soils called for robust spread footings. Practically speaking the work would be expensive and slow if pured on-site, plus the project was behind schedule due to severe weather and flooding. We solved the practical challenges, accelerating and recovering the schedule with segmental footings picked and placed with a 285-ton crain positioned where we could stage. The approach was so successful that we picked and set the buttresses and wing walls segementally, putting the bridge back onto its schedule while overcoming the rath of mother nature.

Professional Services. Kevcor is a professionally licensed engineering firm and licensed major contractor. We do both or either, specialize in footings and foundations, and our clients are primes. This image is from one of our shorefront projects where we designed and constructed the footings for a custom, luxury home builder facing a tough environment. Access was from the sea there were no roads and no ability to get pile-driving barge within reach Permits required the work be done in winter, and the building is situated in a tidal zone over organic soils. Working with the team Kevcor studied market conditions and developed a practical, economically feasible approach. We selected cast-in-place piers carrying a continuous grade beam footings, designed a concrete mix that could be pumped the 100-yards through a tidal estuary, obtained regulatory approvals, and got the job done on-time, on-budget, and with no loss time injuries.

Sensitivity to the Environmental. Kevcor works with the environment, not against it. We do this by understanding the conditions , engaging the right specialists, and balancing sound engineering and commercial practices with common sense and regulatory expectations.

Pictured here is a 102' timber bridge crossing directly through a sensitive wetland located just upland of a municipal reservoir. The bridge carries vehicular traffic and is located at the base of a valley that cannot be accessed by pile driving equipment. Footing and foundation alternatives were limited.

Kevcor was contracted to plan, assist in permitting, design and build this bridge. Working closely with specialty consulting firms, regulators, municipal authorities and the owner, we successfully obtained all permits and completed construction on time, beneath the owner's budget, with no loss time injuries, and no regulatory / environmental issues.

Our team's hands-on, working experience with the design and construction of footing systems includes:

Rammed aggregate piers

Helical cast-in-place piles

Concrete, timber and steel bearing piles

Concrete and steel friction piles

Micro piles

Matt slabs

Conventional spread footers

Geogrid

Segemental footings and foundation systems

Bridges. Getting out of the ground with a bridge project is the biggest risk and majority of work, making the spans is like connecting dots if the footings and foundations have gone as planned. Because of this Kevcor has been successful integrating its specialty services into a one-stop-shop design / build service for our clients – they focus on the bigger project and we get the bridges out of the way on-time and budget. We have worked with spans ranging from 20 to 185 feet, loads ranging from pedestrian to highway. The work is challenging and complex, particularly where we are working in highly visible, delicate environmental conditions. The image below is from of one of of design / build projects that evolved from a value engineering exercise. Originally Kevcor was hired as the general contractor responsible for building the bridge and approaches. This project  was adeptly designed by another engineering firm and was arch-span, segmental plank bridge with veneer stone finish, an architecturally magnificent design but complex and expensive to construct in this environment. Following award the owner had 2nd thoughts about the budget and asked Kevcor to value-engineer alternatives that stayed with the arch-span design. We value-engineered a timber arch-span timber bridge of the same architectural concept and service loads. The owner signed-off and we completed the bridge portion of the project at roughly half the cost of the original design.

Retaining Walls. Stability of a retaining wall's footing is a significant cost-driver, sometimes resulting in complex designs that are expensive to construct. At Kevcor we have developed technologies that innovate on segmental techniques. Our footings are economical, relatively easy to construct, and produce the same stability as their cast-in-place counterparts. Pictured here one such footing for a 20-foot tall, 160-feet long serpentine retaining wall  in a flood plane at the base of a valley supporting the only access road into a larger job site. Nothing could be done until this wall was constructed and geotechnical reports indicated that a complex cast-in-place was needed. Kevcor was hired to build the wall and working with the team we value-engineered the footings for a shared-savings, which we accomplished with a segmental system that simultaneously accelerated schedules.

Commercial. Most of our projects are driven by financial incentives and disincentives, such as revenue and liquidated damages. The existing site depicted here was a DOT vehicle inspection center, gas station, and har salon. Kevcor was hired by the private developer as Project Manager responsible for design, environmental remediation, permitting, and construction of this CVS pharmecy and walk-in clinic. Part of Kevcor solutions on this project was to deliver business and engineering expertise to this challenging project and with a relentless drive towards schedule and budget expectations. Though this project faced significant environmental, geotechnical and permitting issues posing substantial risk to schedules and budgets, we brought leadership and management to the team that successfully completed 3-months ahead of schedule and under budget.

Control. Our client's are faced with accomplishing more their mission with fewer resources, where innovation and expertise combine to deliver projects. Pictured here is modular unit being placed into position for a school and office buiilding. Kevcor was engaged as the Owner Representative for this project, responsible for managing design and construction activities on behald of the client. The Archited created a brilliant design that was unfortunately 50% over the Owner's budget. Kevcor was thehn engaged to conduct value engineering and the solution was modular constructon. Market conditions were such that local builders had no experience with this type of cost-savging approach. Kevcor was engaged to deliver firm, fixed price design / build solution guranteeing the project at a savings beneath what was estiamted while saving considerable time on the schedule.

Design / Build. Kevcor offers design / build solutions for certain clients and on a firm, fixed price basis. We will provide surety backed performance and payment bonds as required, and our services include all aspects of project delivery. We self peform critical aspects of the project including design engineering and construction of footing and foundation systems, and trades critical to the project schedule. We self-perform related design engineering, site civil, carpentry, and masonry activities and maintain rolling stock equipment, tools, and personnel experienced in these aspects of the work. All site work and masonry is performed by Kevcor personnel. All carpentry is performed by our sister company, Native Framing, Inc., which is a North Carolina based Native American Indian owned and operated carpentry construction company operating in conformation with Kevcor standards.

Excellence. Some of our clients take us places where we have not been because they trust our work. Pictured here is blade technology data-center. Our client originally engaged Kevcor as its Project Manager for a 100,000 s.f. institutional building and through this experience engaged us to design / build its data center at the center, the very heart of its operations. Kevcor was responsible for the racks, UPS, dual-fuel emergency generator, HVAC, structural improvements, and construction. This data center is physically located in the center of the client's operations and we completed the project ahead of schedule, on budget, and while maintaining continuous operations of the data center and office. A unique feature to blade technology is that the technology evolves as quicly as it can take to build the center. Time, foward thinking, and working closely with the client are quintessential elements to success.

Commitment. Pictured here is a private, commercial club that opens and closes its season on specific dates. These dates cannot change. Kevcor was engaged to design / build a major re-design and renovation to the areas of the club seen here including landscapes, the centroid of club activity during its season. The project had to be completed in a narrow window of time through the winter, between Labor and Memorial Day and in a constrained site with steep hills and limited access. Kevcor committed to getting this job done despite these formidable obstacles, completing on-time and on-budget.
